• The research field of the built environment is fundamental to the plan, design, construction, and maintenance of all the infrastructures. In this research area of the school of civil, environmental, and architectural engineering at Korea University, which consists of structural engineering, architectural structural engineering, and geotechnical engineering, innovative researches on new and renewable energy infrastructure such as advanced renewable energy facilities as well as the conventional infrastructures such as bridges, buildings, tunnels, and foundations is actively conducted.

Optimization of smart construction and
transportation systems

• The Smart Construction and Mobility program develops safe, efficient, and sustainable construction and transportation systems through the application of state-of-the-art smart IT technologies such as machine learning, artificial intelligence, robotics, and drones.

For Earth and Human’s Sustainable Future

• Human lives in natural environment. In order for human’s life to be harmonized with nature, we should address various water-related science and engineering problems. Water & Ecosystems domain consists of (1) Hydro Science and Engineering that solves problems related to water resources, rainfall-runoff, river, and costal engineering and (2) Environmental Engineering that provides technical options to properly address the contamination of various environmental media.

Energy System in Transition to Renewables.

• Energy System field covers multidisciplinary engineering areas essential for the transition to renewables for sustainable, liveable future. This field is on the basis of thermodynamics, heat transfer, material science, building physics, and statistics to develop energy production/conversion from renewables, energy storage/transportation, and whole energy system design. Particularly, current faculty members have focused on developing next-generation solar cells, batteries and hydrogen fuel cells, and optimizing design and operation of smart energy systems.
