Research Area Built Environment

The research field of the built environment is fundamental to the plan, design, construction, and maintenance of all the infrastructures. In this research area of the school of civil, environmental, and architectural engineering at Korea University, which consists of structural engineering, architectural structural engineering, and geotechnical engineering, innovative researches on new and renewable energy infrastructure such as advanced renewable energy facilities as well as the conventional infrastructures such as bridges, buildings, tunnels, and foundations is actively conducted. In addition, convergence researches are being carried out to overcome various difficulties in the design, analysis, and maintenance of infrastructures by utilizing the 4th industrial revolution technologies such as artificial intelligence, drones, digital twin, point cloud, and 3D printing.

Structural Engineering

Structural engineering is a science and technology that is the basis of human civilization and has been a measure of social development since the beginning of human history as a study for investigation, observation, design, construction, and maintenance. Structural engineering has made significant contributions from the development of various residential environments to all areas of human activity, and its utility is increasing day by day with the prosperity of mankind. Today, structural engineering seeks to increase its aesthetic value along with economic efficiency, stability, and functionality.

  • SmartCon CNS Solution Laboratory

This laboratory conducts research on the development of technology for the improvement of materials and structural performance of concrete and FRP, which are typically utilized as construction materials, as well as their application and utilization in actual structures.

  • Probability, Reliability, Optimization, and Stochastics Laboratory

Structural Analysis Lab is mainly conducting research on the life cycle analysis of structures with uncertainty such as various live loads, corrosion and deterioration, and dynamic behavior such as earthquakes and typhoons. Because a structure is exposed to various environments during its life cycle, the load is always changing and the performance of the structure is constantly changing. Therefore, such variability and uncertainty must be taken into account for the life cycle analysis of structures. Furthermore, we are conducting practical research on facility inspection and diagnosis, performance history analysis, repair and reinforcement construction method selection, future cost prediction, and optimal maintenance cost calculation.

  • Structural Engineering & Mechanics Laboratory

In our lab, we are interested in solving challenging problems in engineering and mechanics. Currently, we are focusing on the offshore wind structure and the concrete material fields. In the offshore wind structure field, we research the design and analysis method for the offshore wind support structures. In the concrete material field, we study the development of new concrete materials for structures. Also, we research the chemo-mechanical models of concrete durability and the application of AI techniques.
Recently, we are starting a new research on digitalization of construction standards using semantic web technology.
